'7th Heaven' Splitting after 10 Seasons (Friday, November 11 09:15 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) The longest-running series in The WB's history, "7th Heaven," will call it quits at the end of this season after a decade on the air.

The network made the announcement Friday (Nov. 11), seven episodes into the show's 10th season. The early notice will allow series creator Brenda Hampton and her writing team time to craft stories leading up to the series finale, not to mention give The WB ample time to promote "the final season."

"We're announcing this decision now to ensure a monumental send-off for this series, which has become one of the most important shows in the network's history," WB Entertainment chief David Janollari says. "We owe a compelling and unforgettable final season to the Camden family and to the millions of viewers who helped grow this program into a huge hit. The WB is eternally grateful to Spelling Television, the producers, cast and crew of the little show that could -- and did."

Hampton says she didn't relish breaking the news to the "7th Heaven" cast and crew, but she believes it's better to go out sooner than later. "Just like the Camden kids, I think we've all grown up and it's simply time to leave home. We choose to feel happy and blessed to have been part of this series, and we are very grateful to all our fans."

The series premiered on Aug. 26, 1996, and has never budged from its 8 p.m. Monday timeslot. This year's season premiere was the show's 200th episode, and with its 10th season, "7th Heaven" can now lay claim to being the longest-running family drama in TV history, in terms of seasons.

Although its ratings have dipped some recently, "7th Heaven" is still a reliable ratings draw; it's averaging 5.1 million viewers per week this season.

The series stars Stephen Collins, Catherine Hicks, Beverley Mitchell, David Gallagher, Mackenzie Rosman, George Stults, Tyler Hoechlin and Nikolas and Lorenzo Brino.
